i. Simmel notes how, once we create culture, it takes on a life of its own and can control and constrain us. For example, a society can invent a language that allows for mutual understanding but develops to include divisive terms that negatively impact certain groups. To what extent has technology increased the control and constraint of culture? To what extent has technology provided opportunities to push back against the control and constraint of culture?
ii. It has been argued that Simmel's work is fragmentary and lacks a cohesive vision. What would you consider to be Simmel's "main point," or the driving argument behind his work?
