People often argue that economic rewards in the society should be meritocratic, that is, that everyone should have an equal opportunity to get ahead and those that do succeed because of their greater ability, hard work, and so on, should then be allowed to enjoy the full fruits of their labor. What would have to be true about the variation in demand and supply curves for human capital among individuals in the population to accomplish this goal?
