Adam Liptak and Alicia Parlapiano authored and article in the New York Times last updated on July 1, 2015 titled "Major Supreme Court Cases of 2015". You are all intelligent and resourceful, so I assume you can Google it and find the article. It includes descriptions of decisions on fifteen important legal topics. Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to pick one of the Supreme Court cases references, find the Court's opinion online, print it, and read the case. A paper or electronic copy of the Court's opinion should be attached to your project. You may also conduct whatever outside research you wish. Generally speaking, there more you read about the case and the issues presented, the better your project will be. You may also be able to relate the issues of the case to materials we covered in class. Attach a list any sources you read preparing for your project to your project. Based upon your reading and research, answer the following questions in detail in essay form.
1. Identify the parties. (For example: plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, counter-plaintiff, counter defendant, cross plaintiff, cross defendant, and/or other named parties)
2. How did the case get to the Supreme Court? (For example: Was there a lower court decision? What was the lower court decision? Identify the lower court from which the decision came.)
3. What were the issues presented to the Supreme Court to decide?
4. What was the decision of the Supreme Court? Explain in detail the reasons for the Court's decision.
5. Was the Supreme Court decision based in part on their interpretation of a statue? If so, identify the statute.
6. Was the Supreme Court decision in part based on following prior decisions of a court under the doctrine of Stare Decisis? If so, what were the prior court decisions the court considered?
7. Were there other public policy considerations considered by the court? If so, identify them.
8. Were there Concurring or Dissenting opinions issued? Briefly explain the areas of agreement or disagreement between theses opinions and the majority opinion.
9. What actual or potential impact does the Supreme Court's decision have on you personally or in your future role as a businessperson? What impact could the decision have on businesses generally?
10. In your opinion did the majority of the Supreme Court get the decision right? How would you have decided the case if you were on the Court and why would you have decided the case in that way?
