This Discussion centers on the idea of "being and becoming." Here, in the introduction to Becoming Mexican American, Sanchez borrows the idea from Stuart Hall. Hall is asking us to think about how historical events and the context in which they happen, inform the formation of identity. When we think about "being and becoming," Halls is asking us to think about a process, a process that encompasses a historical moment, but in addition, Hall is making the observation that the process creates change. In other words, historical moments, although we may think of them as static, historical moments create change, doing away with the static.
