Problem 1. Criticisms by various groups have been leveled against the government and society as a whole throughout all the periods covered in this course. What were some of the criticisms seen in at least three different eras? What were the responses to these criticisms?
(Think about all of the attempts to change laws, all of the protests, all of the people that have expressed that they were not happy with the state of things. What have they been unhappy about? How has the government or other members of society reacted? An example would be abolitionists in the 1850s)
Problem 2. Presidential Power has changed repeatedly during the times covered through our course. (1870-1990) Discuss at least three different ways Presidents have used and possibly abused (depending on your perspective), executive power. What responsibility do you think the President has to the American people?
(Think about the role of the President and how he impacts the way our country works. How have Presidents used their power? Have they always used it well or do you think there are President's who have used it poorly or have done things that upset people. This question is asking you to consider the leaders in the different time periods we covered in class while also commenting on what responsibility you think the President has to the American people. An example would be James K Polk deciding to push Congress to declare War with Mexico over the Texas border just because the US wanted more land.)
Problem 3. In what ways was World War II a total war? Use economic, political, and social examples.
(A total war means that it impacts every facet of society. You could speak specifically about America or about the impact of the war on other nations as well)
Problem 4. The Progressives were active during the Gilded Age. In what ways were leaders and Presidential policies progressive during later time periods? Did these leaders experience backlash? In what ways? (Look at years 1920-2020)
(Progressives wanted to use Science and Technology to make the world a better place. What Presidents or leaders came up with policies that were progressive or were trying to make the world a better place? Were their ideas accepted? If not, what did people disagree with?)
