Washington's focus on gaining economic self-sufficiency before securing civil rights for blacks increased during the Progressive Era. Describe one or two alternative visions for racial progress that were advanced by leading blacks during the Progressive Era. In the context of the circumstances that black America was facing during the Progressive era, what were the merits and limitations of these alternative approaches?
