Discussion Post: CCIS history to 1877
• As you have read in this first chapter and the assigned primary sources and media this week, several worlds collided, each having a long history of their own that would affect the way they saw the other cultures. As Columbus and others set off looking for wealth, glory, and converts to God, what was the impact of European conquest on the population and environment of the New World? Explain your answer with specific examples from your assigned reading and media.
• Cultural and economic worlds continue to collide. Through your reading, though, you come to understand the contrast between the colonization of South America and North America. Focusing on North American colonization, what were the objectives of English, French, and Dutch colonization?
In what ways did those objectives a?ect the Indigenous population; and why, instead of using that population, did the English colonists begin to import slaves from Africa? Explain your answer with speci?c examples from your assigned reading and media.
• Assigned reading and media, you have seen the colonies become established after a time of instability including Bacon's Rebellion and the Salem Witch trials. However, by the beginning of the 18th Century, the colonies were experiencing opportunities for economic and intellectual growth. What was the "industrious revolution," how did it shape the colonial economy, and what other factors shaped the development of the colonial economy? Explain your answer with speci?c examples from your assigned reading and media.
• As you have seen through your assigned reading and media this week, the colonists wanted to be treated like their British contemporaries, including representation within Parliament. However, Parliament argued the colonists were represented, as most British citizens, through virtual representation. What was the series of events that brought Britain and the colonies to the brink of war by 1774? To what extent were these experiences the product of poor leadership? Di?ering theories of government? Di?erent social experiences? Explain your answer with speci?c examples from your assigned reading and media.
