Confucianism became the most influential religion in Chinese society and remained that way for many centuries. As you consider the question, notice that in classical Confucianism, there is no transcendent foundation for the Way. In other words, the Way is not based on a foundation or divine power existing beyond or outside the world.
i. In your view, do you think an orderly and ethical society requires a transcendent foundation? (Why or why not?)
ii. Based on Lesson 6, what was the basis of an ethical society for Confucius, given the absence of a transcendent foundation?
