Network Administrator - the criminal?
Today I find myself reflecting on interesting scenarios that I have run into in my professional HIM years and one that applies to this week's topic regards a 'Network Administrator' that I worked with.
A Network Administrator is quite different from a Database Administrator or System Manager but each of the positions has two things in common:
• Work closely with multiple computer healthcare systems (Lab, Radiology, EHR, Finance, Payroll, etc.)
• High security levels - a level that allows them to 'administer or manage' a group of systems, networks and IT professionals.
So here is a brief review of the scenario: our network administrator was arrested (while off duty) for indecent exposure and while this is typically a misdemeanor, the violation involved more than one minor - which escalated the charges.
So - how do you think this impacted the person's professional life as a Network Administrator at a healthcare facility?
The person lost their job - completely - lost their job. As you likely know, anyone who works in or around healthcare information or healthcare reimbursement must be free of a criminal record and while the outcome of the charges against the Network Administrator were unclear to the healthcare employer, it completely put them into jeopardy- and Medicare reimbursement is NOT SOMETHING a healthcare facility wants jeopardized.
Here, the professional life and the personal life become ONE.
Please answer
1) what was he charged with and 2) explain why his arrest might impact the reimbursement at the facility that employed him. This is a way to demonstrate that announcements can add value to course content.
2) Uses of data, gathering it, analyzing it summarizing it reporting it, recommending changes time consuming. IT has great reward improving the quality of healthcare and making healthcare more safer. There may be benefits that result in the revenue cycle as well.
Before any of the above can occur the data entry data extraction and data analysis must be reliable.
