Problem: What viral techniques/methods would you recommend for the quick and reliable diagnosis of viral agents in patient's samples that would enhance the diagnostic turn-around while maintaining reliable test results. In general, diagnostic tests can be grouped into 3 categories. Each of the 3 categories contains various diagnostic tests (not all inclusive) that you will use to evaluate.
1. Direct Examination of Specimen (Electron and Light Microscopy, Antigen detection immunofluorescence, ELISA, etc., and Molecular techniques for the direct detection of viral genomes).
2. Indirect Examination (Cell Culture - cytopathic effect (CPE), haemadsorption, confirmation by neutralization, interference, immunofluorescence, etc., Eggs pocks on CAM - haemagglutination, inclusion bodies, Animals disease or death confirmation by neutralization).
3. Serology - Classical and Newer Techniques (Radioimmunoassay, Western blot, Complement fixation test, etc.)
