Victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) represent a highly vulnerable population experiencing physical, emotional, sexual, psychological, or financial abuse from a current or former partner. IPV affects individuals across gender, race, socioeconomic status, religion, and sexual orientation; however, women, particularly women of color, immigrants, and individuals with disabilities, are disproportionately impacted due to systemic inequalities and barriers to resources (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022; World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Cultural factors such as gender roles, family expectations, religious beliefs, and community norms often shape how abuse is perceived and whether survivors feel safe seeking help.
Safety remains a primary challenge for survivors, many of whom remain in abusive relationships due to fear of retaliation, financial dependence, concern for children, or lack of social support. Psychological consequences, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and diminished self-worth, frequently persist long after the abuse ends (CDC, 2022). Survivors also encounter practical barriers such as housing instability, limited healthcare access, language obstacles, and mistrust of legal or social service systems. Cultural stigma surrounding IPV can further isolate victims, particularly in communities where abuse is normalized or silenced. LGBTQ+ survivors may face additional challenges, including discrimination, lack of inclusive services, or fear of being outed.
These intersecting challenges underscore the importance of trauma-informed and culturally responsive social work practice. Social workers play a critical role in advocacy, safety planning, and connecting survivors to resources that foster empowerment, autonomy, and long-term healing (CDC, 2022; WHO, 2021).
