In a 2005 report, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime revealed that Africa was the leading region for cannabis production, accounting for 10,500 metric tons, which is 25% of the world's total production. In 2013, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reported that heroin and cocaine usage were declining and prescription drugs and new psychoactive substances were increasing (Armiya'u, 2015; Cumber & Tsoka-Gwegweni, 2015). This information was confirmed in an annual report from 2017; the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime found that in 24% of African countries, drug use included cannabis, non-medical use of prescription opioids, opiates, and new psychoactive substances. However, in Olawole-Isaac et al.'s (2018) study, West African countries had the highest percentage of various drugs (46.7%) compared to other regions in Africa. The study also found that East Africa had the highest rate of cannabis use among adolescents at 28.9%, followed by Southern Africa at 25.7%, West Africa had a lower rate at 7.06%, while Central Africa had the lowest usage at 4.9% (Olawole-Isaac et al., 2018).
