II. Read the CAFO Contamination document. Answer the following questions based on your reading.
i. What is a CAFO and how is it different from traditional farming?
ii. Based on what you currently know about CAFOs, what can you infer are some of the issues for each side of the CAFO controversy? Give 3 arguments each that proponents and opponents might each state for and against CAFOs?
iii. What were some of the concerns and medical conditions that the residents were complaining of? What additional information would we need to know to link those issues to the presence of the CAFOs?
iv. What are some of the types of microorganisms identified in Hattie's water samples? What do these microorganisms indicate?
v. What are the levels of E. coli in water that the EPA consider safe for recreational use? What are the levels for drinking water? Why do you think these levels are different?
vi. What is the proposed plan the farms are considering to help their cause against the CAFO expansion? Do you think this will be an effective plan? Why or why not?
III. Look around your house (or the grocery store) for 3 processed products that are made with genetically engineered ingredients. List the 3 products.
i. How did you know? What does the package say?
ii. Was it hard or easy to find these products?
iii. Were any of them a surprise to you?
iv. How do you personally feel about eating GMOs? Explain in at least 2 to 3 sentences.
