What sparked the civil rights marches in 1968 in Northern Ireland?

On reading “Conflict in Northern Ireland”, it is clear that there are long term causes as well as short term ones. Darby sets out to explain four key dates that are important in the history of the conflict in Northern Ireland. The dates he considers are 1170 – the invasion of the Normans; 1609- The plantation of Ulster; 1921 – Partition and 1969 – civil rights. By his inclusion of these four dates, he is arguing that these events are crucial in the formation of the divided society of Northern Ireland. He argues that 1170 and 1609 are important as they signal important arrivals of non-Irish peoples who took over from native Irish. 1921 is important because it was the start of the division between Northern Ireland, continuing as part of United Kingdom and The Irish Free State, independent of UK. While the article is presented in a descriptive style, the choice of dates/events to discuss is itself an argument. Darby is arguing that these events set up the ethnic and religious divisions in Ireland that continued to have repercussions into the period after 1968 and are in effect the main reasons for the continuing conflict in Northern Ireland.

In class, the student who lived in Northern Ireland as a child described the ways that discrimination worked, particularly with regard to voting and how that made Catholics like her family feel. This gave a very graphic example of who the every day discrimination prompted people to fight for civil rights.
