What should be done to simplify the client

Your company's LAN needs to be updated. There are 30 workstations, 8 laptops, and several peripherals, such as printers. The laptops are configured for broadband Internet connections so employees can use them at home and during business travel. The company LAN connects via a T1 link to a local ISP using a router. The router also connects five switches positioned at different locations around the building. Each network client connects to its nearest switch. All clients on the network are assigned static IP addresses that are leased from the local ISP. Network maintenance has been frustrating with this setup in place and expansion capability is questionable. In addition to being tasked with updating the current LAN and its IP addressing issues, you are tasked with implementing a mail server and client software for employees.

  • What should be done to simplify the client IP assignment process as well as help conserve IP addresses for future company expansion?
  • What protocols would the mail system support or require? Given these protocols, what ports must be available to clients?
