Problem: Please give feedback/comment on: What role should the elementary classroom teacher take in teaching health content in the curriculum?
A teacher should take on a fairly active role in teaching health content. While I believe it should primarily left up to parents to teach health content, some things should be work on or continued in the classroom. Teachers should be giving reminders to children about washing hands, wiping noses with tissues, coughing and sneezing in their elbow. There should be some lessons or units that involve healthy eating, sleeping, and other general safety rules. There should be conversations that may be a little difficult because there are children out there who may be abused and that's all they know, but putting some safety tips and other conversations should be talked about or some children may never realize those signs. Parents should be having these conversations at home, but all households are different and some children may be learning things wrong because the parents were never taught or they were given bad advice so it is important that children learn the correct facts.
