Choose one topic for your initial post:

Health-related Initiatives
You are the administrator of a typical county-based LHD in a largely rural state. Your newly elected county board president has ordered you to come up with new health-related initiatives that will improve the health of the county's residents. What health issue would you address and how would you approach this task? Use specific information you learned from your assigned readings.

Obtain the community health plan (or a summary) for your city or county and review the process that developed it for consistency with the 11 steps of Model Standards (Anne Arundel County) and with the essential public health services framework. In what ways did the process and plan differ from these frameworks?

Presentation - Addressing mental health, class, gender, and race
Overview
If you've taken a sociological theory course you are likely familiar with Herbert Blumer's work and social interactionism theory. In the 1960s, Erving Goffman put forward the idea that social interactionism can be applied to understanding mental health. Individuals engage in self-fulfilling prophecies that support them living up to the image others have of them and expect of them. Goffman suggested that people institutionalized with mental illness can rework their self-image based on the institutionalization.
For this assignment, we will expand upon our understanding of sociology of medicine, health, illness; more specifically, mental health and illness. Within a 10-12 slide presentation (title and reference slide do not count), you will explain the links between stress, the environment, illness and mental illness. You will then explain how three social variables: class, gender, and race differ in terms of mental health/illness. Further, you will apply at least four social concepts to mental health/illness. Finally, you will define at least one sociological theory and explain how it can be applied to mental health/illness.
You may also use PowerPoint or use another presentation program. Please attach, embed, or provide a link to your presentation.
Your Presentation must do the following:
Explain the links between stress, environment, illness and mental health (bullet points).
Explain class, gender, and race (social variables) differences in mental health/illness (bullet points)
Apply at least four (do not select class, gender, or race) social concepts from our readings/materials that relate to mental health/illness. For example, social isolation and stigma.
Define at least one sociological theory and explain how it can be applied to mental health/illness. Sociological theories include functionalism, conflict theory, feminist theory, symbolic interactionism, and others as mentioned in our readings and materials.
Include at least 3 peer-reviewed journal articles no more than five years old.
Your 10-12 slide presentation should utilize sound critical thought and it should include appropriate.
