Question 1 (Race vs Ethnicity)
Discuss the differences between race and ethnicity as outlined in the chapter readings, especially as social categories. We often say in anthropology that race is an etic (outside or imposed category of identification) whereas ethnicity is emic (inside / self and group defined). Provide an example of each in your discussion.
Question 2 (Dangers of Nationalism)
Debates about nationalism are often intertwined with politics. Your text uses the Srebrenica massacre of 1995 (Figure 14.11) as one such example of the dangers of nationalism. What role does "naturalizing discourses" play in nation building and can be used in the disenfranchisement of some from the discussion of what national identity means?
