Examine your own social network profile or one of a friend or an example you find online. Evaluate the profile in terms of the principles of communication discussion during module 1. What purposes does the profile serve? In what ways might it serve the five purposes of communication identified here (to learn, relate, influence, play, and help)? In what ways is the profile page a package of signals? What are the differences between "free" speech and "ethical" speech in the profile? Can you identify and distinguish between content from relational messages? Could ethical speech conflict with free speech? What role does culture play in profile communications? When looking at your social network what qualities are used for communication competence? What are the implications of inevitability, irreversibility, and unrepeatability for publishing a profile on and communicating via social network sites?
