What role did disputes about religion play in motivating many of those who left Europe to come to the New World? In light of what you read about the attempts by the Puritans and the Pilgrims to establish orthodoxy, to what extent did the desire to escape religious persecution and the commitment to ensure religious freedom dovetail and/or differ? How did Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson, both of whom were devout but not orthodox, drive the narrative toward freedom of religion as later guaranteed by the First Amendment? Explain your answer.
