Xterra Drugs gets approval from the FDA to test a new cholesterol-lowering drug called L7wf31 on humans after successfully testing it in a laboratory setting. They test the drug on 10,000 females between the ages 40 and 60. All the women are non-smokers and have high cholesterol levels. Half the women take 30 mg of L7wf31 daily in pill form for 60 days but do not change their lifestyles and routines in any other way (this is the experimental group). Half the women take a 30 mg placebo pill for 60 days and do not change their lifestyles and routines in any other way (this is the control group). Neither the women nor the scientists know who is in which group. Xterra scientists test the women's cholesterol levels both before and after the drug trial.
