However, in some states, women are not seen to have any rights at all, so this is not a problem. In cases like this, is it up to the international community to step in protect the basic rights of women, or does culture get to dictate what qualifies as a basic human right? If a state marginalizes a certain group of people, does that culture get to continue doing so because it is the right of the state? At what point is the international community overstepping and erasing culture by protecting specific rights?
