Problem:
150 word response to post: Peacekeeping efforts and/or mission work can lead to vicarious trauma and/or compassion fatigue due to continuous indirect exposure to traumatic incidents experienced by the very people one is attempting to assist. One does not need to personally and directly experience a traumatic event to develop PTSD. This indirect exposure to trauma causes humanitarian workers, journalists, and social workers to develop mental health conditions that require attention. Human rights officers tasked with interviewing victims and witnesses of murders, mutilations, or rapes may also develop trauma, anxiety, and PTSD. Treatment options include trauma-focused methods like PFA. PFA consists of psychosocial support interventions designed to assist individuals who have experienced a traumatic event; it involves providing information, assistance, and referrals to specialized services, should they be necessary. Those engaged in missionary work are fulfilling a valuable duty, just as our Lord Jesus Christ did. Carrying His message of peace, love, and acceptance to those in despair is a task that can entail significant consequences for those performing this social work. As professional counselors at GCU and as faithful believers in the Gospel and in the restoration of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ on earth we must provide professionals dedicated to helping others with therapeutic resources, such as PFA and trauma-informed without compromising their mental and physical health.
