Homework: Parenting Today
Part A:
This is a very exciting and special week!
A local journalist in your area has invited you to write an article for an upcoming edition of "Positive Parenting" magazine. Your article will focus on Early and Late Adolescent parenting issues. Your (5) responses will be published in the upcoming Summer edition of the magazine with your photo and bio. Please maintain the "Q and A" format and respond fully based on your knowledge. Your responses should offer clear and comprehensive sentences. At the beginning of your responses, please give your article a name ( e.g., "Parenting Your Adolescent: Understanding and Caring from the Heart" by Your Full Name)

1) What types of physical, biological and/or hormonal changes occur in adolescence? What are some examples that parents often have difficulty with understanding? What health related web site might offer more information to parents in your area?

4) Eating disorders have been known to cause serious health issues for adolescents, including cardiac and neurological problems. What should a parent do if he/she suspects that their adolescent has an eating disorder? How can they help their adolescent avoid skipping meals, eating at fast food restaurants and buying high calorie foods? What State government web site could help a parent in understanding eating disorders?
5) What can parents do to promote postponing early sexual activity and help adolescents avoid the difficulties that are associated with an unintended pregnancy?
6) How can parents help their teen avoid getting involved with substance abuse? alcohol abuse? or abusing synthetic drugs. Name one national campaign that you want to share with your viewers?
7) How can parents help their teen develop a sense of purpose or get connected to a volunteer group? Name one state or national effort that works to identify youth for their volunteer or leadership efforts?
8) What steps should a parent take in order to help their adolescent cope with feelings of depression? Please share three services that you would like to connect families to who have a depressed teen.
Part B:
End your article by sharing a recent example of nurturing you have observed in your local grocery store, mall, doctor's office, school which demonstrates the importance of parent to teen closeness and open communication? Please be very specific.
