Ms. Marlo Thomas, a 78 year-old woman, is visiting the clinic for follow-up care for musculoskeletal pain related to fibromyalgia and recurrent sciatica. She was diagnosed 5 months ago and still has not been able to control her pain to a desirable level. Current medications include a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor for depression, a benzodiazepine for muscle spasm, and an analgesic for pain. Ms. Thomas has been seen twice since for pain control.
Ms. Thomas is referred to a pain control specialist for a comprehensive assessment of her pain.
• What pain assessment tools are most appropriate for Ms. Thomas?
