Choose one of the topics below to discuss or one of your own choosing as long as it is relevant to the course material:
There are so many interesting areas you can discuss in this section: management theory, management skills, time management tools, motivating people, etc. etc. Where to start? Here are some ideas but feel free to come up with your own:
A. Which of the management theories--situational, principle-centered, or empowerment--do you think better fits your own style and beliefs? Or is there a different one out there that suits you better?
B. What kind of a team player are you? Take this team player survey and share your findings. What is your dominant style? Would you make any changes to the description of your style? What are the strengths you can offer to a work team and some attributes that you might want to watch out for so they don't become a distraction to the team?
C. Discuss motivators: money, achievement, recognition, or affiliation. What motivates you and/or what motivators have you observed in people you know or have worked with?
D. I have heard payroll practitioners say that this section in The Payroll Source is a waste of time and they don't think management-related knowledge, skills, and abilities have a place on the certification exams because this skill has nothing to do with payroll. What do you think?
E. Share your own experience as a manager or an experience you had with a manager. What basic management skills did you wish you or they had at the time that could have made the experience better for the manager, the employee, and the company?
F. How are you with time management? The four quadrants in Table 13.3 can apply to more than business managers. Do you need to change where you are spending your time? If so, how? If you are good at time management, how do you manage it?
