Understanding and mitigating risk is a Critical Success Factor for any organization. Risks come in many shapes and sizes. Many risks are environmental: legal, market, technology... Rules and standards are an essential tool in risk mitigation. Some standards are general, while others are industry specific.
Villar (2009) points out that enterprise information management systems make use of scorecards and evaluative metrics to align and coordinate governance policies and standards across IT organizations.
Pick an organization or industry and identify what IT standards or standardized methods are used.
