Read After Peaches and Promise and Compose a post of least two paragraphs in which you explain how either After Peaches or Promise lives or does not live up to the ideals of the Diverse Books movement. What kinds of diversity are represented, and do you think they are portrayed accurately?
After Peaches: After moving from Mexico to Canada, ten-year-old Rosario Ramirez is teased at school and vows never to speak English until she has a perfect Canadian accent. When a family friend gets sick, however, Rosario is forced to use her voice since neither of her parents speak English well.
Promise: Eleven-year-old Kaden's only friend is Kubla, his pet crow. He lives with his Grandma in a cabin outside the small town of Promise. Starting middle school means Kaden's life will get a lot more complicated--but nothing in school could prepare him for the return of his long-incarcerated dad, whom he never knew. Kaden wonders if they will like each other. Then the offer of a new friendship opens up a brand new world to Kaden, one he isn't sure he wants to enter.
