What kind of variation will be visible on this chart

Determining the natural tolerances for the densitometer. Remove any samples in given Table that your work in given Exercise showed to be out of control on either chart. Estimate the mean and standard deviation of individual measurements on the phantom. What are the natural tolerances for these measurements?

Exercise
Monitoring the calibration of a densitometer. Loss of bone density is a serious health problem for many people, especially older women. Conventional X-rays often fail to detect loss of bone density until the loss reaches 25% or more. New equipment such as the Lunar bone densitometer is much more sensitive. A health clinic installs one of these machines. The manufacturer supplies a "phantom," an aluminum piece of known density that can be used to keep the machine calibrated. Each morning, the clinic makes two measurements on the phantom before measuring the first patient. Control charts based on these measurements alert the operators if the machine has lost calibration. Table on the next page contains data for the first 30 days of operation. The units are grams per square centimeter (for technical reasons, area rather than volume is measured).

a) Calculate x and s for the first 2 days to verify the table entries for those quantities

(b) What kind of variation does the s chart monitor in this setting? Make an s chart and comment on control. If any points are out of control, remove them and recompute the chart limits until all remaining points are in control. (That is, assume that special causes are found and removed.)

(c) Make an x chart using the samples that remain after you have completed part (b). What kind of variation will be visible on this chart? Comment on the stability of the machine over these 30 days based on both charts.
