Problem: We can differentiate the ethics of documentaries from the politics of documentaries by noting that ethics refers to the personal responsibility or role of the filmmaker in relation to the subject and the viewer, whereas politics refers to the social function of the documentary film. How does the film participate in the community, and the lives of individuals within it? What kind of political change is the documentary advocating, either explicitly or implicitly? How does the film suggest this political end should be assumed?
