A cylindrical electrical heater element (length = 200 mm, diameter = 20 mm) is used to heat a reservoir of water. The heater is submerged in the water (water temperature = 20 C) and dissipates 2kW of heat while the motion of the water in the reservoir results in a heat transfer coefficient of 5000 W/(m 2 -K). Neglecting any heat transfer through the ends of the cylindrical heater, determine the surface temperature of the heater. Now, assume the inadvertently the heater is removed from the water while it continues to run (it is not shut off). The air temperature is 20 C and the heat transfer coefficient in the air is only 50 W/(m 2 - m). What is the surface temperature of the heater in this case?
