What is the physiological cause of the syndrome known as cretinism?
Cretinism is caused by chronic deficiency of the thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) during childhood. The chronic hypothyroidism during childhood might be cause retardation and low stature because of the low basal metabolic rate in a period of life when growth and development of mind faculties happens.
