Enhancing Productivity: What's mine Is Yours and What's yours Is Mine

Five years ago, Sharonie was returning from maternity leave and was wondering how she was going to manage her academic role as undergraduate hospital program director at North York General Hospital in Toronto, Ontario; her practice; and her young family. Jordana, having covered the role for the year as a locum, wanted to keep her hand in academic. North women want to work, but not full time. Both women work six separate but identical rotations. The arrangement began when they reconciled the workload dilemma with career aspirations, and proposed a job to share the position.

The two are typical of most job sharers- they are women in administrative positions who, for varying personal reasons, do not want full-time work. Job sharing is a small, but important part of the changes being made in the way people work. Flexibility is the key word and the number one priority for an increasing number of employees who are trying to mesh careers with personal lives. More and more employers are viewing flexibility as a necessity and realizing it can be used as a benefit to attract and retain satisfied employees keeping employees happy and loyal to a company can go right to the bottom line.

Studies show that employee loyalty correlates to customer loyalty, which correlates to greater profits and growth. A firm may actually get greater output from two part-time successful job sharers than from one full-time employee. Job sharers are diligent, often focusing intently on the job and maximizing the hours while there.

The arrangement works well for Sharonie and Jordana, and their employer is pleased with the results. Today, not only must employers attract top talent, but they must work to retain it. To do that, organizations must create environments that support employee's family and lifestyle issues.

Task:

i. What jobs would lend themselves to this kind of arrangement? Which would not?
ii. What limitations are there to this type of arrangement? To the organization? To the employee ?
