1). Review the following clinical presentation.
A 12-year boy was seen by a doctor complaining of a sore left leg which was the result of a bicycle injury. Upon examination, the doctor noted a 4 cm x 3 cm purulent cutaneous lesion on the bottom portion of the left leg. The infected leg area was also swollen and red. The patient reported a moderate degree of pain. The doctor strongly suspects a Staphylococcus aureus infection. You are the medical technologist working in the doctor's office, and it is your job to confirm the doctor's diagnosis.

The following guideline outlines the major steps that you would take in order to diagnose this infection. This is sometime referred to as the "6 I's" of labwork: Inoculation, Incubation, Isolation, Inspection, Information gathering, and Identification. Your job is to research each of these steps.
