What is the main point of the selection you chose

Review the Genesis creation story.

Choose one creation story and show how it compares/contrasts to the Genesis one. The following questions should give you some ideas to think about. They are "thought" questions. Do not try to answer each one individually. The point of the essay is to show the similarities and differences between the story you selected and the creation story in the Bible. I have included these questions only for the first essay to give you some guidelines. However, be sure you have read the Response Essay Guidelines posted in Document Sharing.

•What is the main point of the selection you chose?

•What does the story say about how the world or how humans were created?

•What is the God/creator like?

•What method of creation was used (Methods described on 338)?

•What does this story tell about the kind of world the people of the time believed in?

Write a brief essay of about one page following the Response Essay Guidelines. The essay should reflect your own personal opinion. You may use what you have learned from the texts in support of your own opinion, but do not do any additional research. Write the essay in a Microsoft Word document.

The following suggestions will, I hope, give you some ideas for writing good Response Essays.

The essays should be about one page long, double-spaced. But do not double-space between paragraphs. Follow the essay format: brief introductory paragraph, one long middle paragraph (no more than two), and a brief concluding paragraph. Use Times New Roman and 12 font. Put your name on the top of the Word document.

1. Do not use "I think," "I believe," "in my opinion," and other such references to yourself. You are writing the essay based on your own opinion and knowledge you have acquired through reading, so you don't have to tell the reader you are doing so. Never begin an essay with "I." The phrases I have listed are called "padding." It means you are using unnecessary words to make your essay longer.

2. If you use copied material from the textbooks, you must put quotation marks around the quoted material, but you should put this material in your own words (paraphrasing). You don't need to use in-text documentation, however, since you are supposed to use only the two textbooks. Copied material without quotation marks is plagiarism. Do not do any additional research.

3. Don't get off the topic. Remember what you are writing about and your thesis. You definitely should include examples to illustrate your points, but don't let the examples take over and lead you away from your topic. There are always many interesting things to say, but not all of them are relevant to a particular topic. You are supposed to be answering each Response Essay question as if you were a believer in that religion. If you want to put in a comment from your own religious perspective, put it in the conclusion.

4. Be sure you don't confuse the Response Essay question with the Discussion Question.
