Problem
In the middle of a sunny field grew a tall and beautiful sunflower. Because of his greatness, he was named the king of the meadow. One cold spring morning, the king stretched his petals to capture the warming sunlight for himself. "Excuse me" said a daisy from below. "Could you please pull in a petal or two? You're creating a shadow.
The king was shocked. "How dare you make such demands?" "I meant no harm," said the frightened daisy. "But I need the sunlight, too." "So do we!" some violets agreed. "Nonsense!" the king insisted. "However, your sacrifice is noted. You have my thanks." The daisy could not warm himself with thanks, but fearing the king's anger, he shivered in silence. & As the weeks passed, the cold changed to a burning heat. During a rare shower, a geranium spoke up. "Sire," he whispered hoarsely, "we are very thirsty. If you could just part your petals so the rain can reach us "Silence!" shouted the king. "Your needs must wait." Before long, the other flowers were too weak to speak at all. It was then that new sprouts grew quickly around them.
The king frowned at the new plants. " order you to stop growing," he said sternly. "And you must obey me. I rule the flowers here." "But we are weeds, not flowers," they replied. "And we will d* as we please." The king grew alarmed at that. He looked to the other flowers. "Don't you see what is happening? If the weeds are not stopped, we are all doomed" "We know," whispered the daisy. "But without sunlight and water, we lack the strength to fight back." In that moment, the king realized his foolishness. There was still time to make things right. That night it rained hard, and the king lifted his petals, letting the water fall on the flowers below him. When the sun returned, the king made sure its rays reached all his subjects. Soon, the flowers began to straighten up. The next day, the flowers woke up refreshed. They spread their roots and leaves, leaving no room for the weeds, and the meadow was bright with their many colors once more. "That was close, Your Majesty" said the daisy.
"I suppose it was," said the king. "We will have to make sure it doesn't happen again." And it never did.
