The homework will allow to bring together what you have learned during the module to critically evaluate and examine a ‘cultural object'. Cultural object is understood in a broad manner as an object, space that ‘communicates' cultural or symbolic values and can entail an advertisement, a garment, an exhibition, an Instagramm account, or a retail space. You are expected to analyse this ‘cultural object' as a cultural process in its political, spatial and socio-historical context by drawing on the theories, concepts and ideas covered during the module. Please add images, photographs into your essay and add them to your argumentation.
You should outline:
1. Why you have chosen this specific ‘cultural object' - its relevance and timeliness in contemporary society.
2. Your analysis should be driven by a reflective assertion - a point you want to make about how your cultural object is a product of its social environment.
3. What is the historical context of the cultural product you are analyzing.
4. What messages and meanings are communicated by the object, space, fashion trend.
5. How does the cultural object, space, trend fit with broader issues in society such as power relations and what concepts, ideas, theories can be applied on its analysis to understand its relevance in society.
6. Any other information that you think is of relevance to understanding the meaning of your object for contemporary society.
