Between the beginning of George Washington's Federalist presidency in 1789, and the bloodless transfer of political power to the Democratic-Republicans under Thomas Jefferson in 1800, the greatest problem faced by the young United States was foreign relations with Britain and France.
Issues and events that occurred during the administrations of Washington and John Adams were discussed in Worksheet 4. The final segment of that European conflict - the Napoleonic Wars - erupted again between 1803 and 1815, and was responsible for another war between Britain and the United States known as The War of 1812.
