Pick a tectonically active plate convergent boundary somewhere on Earth and review published geophysical literature that you find on the internet or technical websites to characterize it.
As long as you use computers on campus, you should be able to download articles (off campus you may not have subscription access - if you find a paper that you cannot access, let me know and I will download it and send to you).
This is meant to be an exercise both in reading the scientific literature and in presenting a variety of observations concisely. You need not answer all of the questions below, but they may help guide your searching.
What is the current rate of motion? What is the angle of subduction? How long has subduction occurred? Are earthquakes are commonly observed?
What type and magnitude are they (e.g., what moment tensor solutions are most common)? What was the most recent earthquake that occurred (from the USGS website)?
Are there volcanoes associated with the plate margin? How far are they from the plate margin? Is the margin in isostatic equilibrium? Is there anything unusual about this location?
Summarize what you find in no more than 300 words (strictly enforced). You may include an annotated sketch of the plate margin that illustrates findings of geophysical interest. Credit will be awarded on the basis of completeness and accuracy.
