I have not been in the role of a nurse educator, but I feel one of the biggest responsibilities of a nurse educator is to notice when a student is falling behind and step in early. Soroush et al. (2021) discuss how students report that instructors who are approachable and willing to explain mistakes without judgment make a difference in their students' academic performance. By giving clear and specific feedback, offering chances to practice the skills, or reviewing content, educators empower students to take a more active role in their learning. Educators also need to be fair and consistent. The use of rubrics, documenting concerns, and giving students a chance to respond helps protect both the student and the school's program from unfair evaluations.
Adult learners have a major role in education as they need to be responsible, organized, and prioritize tasks to fit school into their lives and work schedules. Learners have to take responsibility by asking questions, using tutoring or practice labs, and being honest about topics that they do not understand. The adult learning theory points out that mature students are expected to be self-directed, so accountability is just as important as support (Lewis & Bryan, 2021).
Thinking back at my own journey through nursing school, the feedback that helped me the most was both honest and encouraging. When an instructor told me what I was doing well before pointing out areas I needed to fix made me feel slightly less vulnerable. That made it easier to hear the criticism without feeling defeated. Being able to have brief one-on-one conversations with my instructor was valuable. I felt like my instructor cared about my growth and not just my grades. Overall, I think success in nursing school requires effort on both sides. Educators need to have the ability to evaluate fairly and give students a chance to improve, while students must take initiative and do the work required to grow academically and professionally.
