What is the activity of a protein and why is it important

Discussion:

Spectrophotometric Assay of Bovine Pancreatic Ribonuclease b

I recently read over an experiment multiple times and I am having trouble really get a good grasp of what they did, how they did it, and why they did it. The experiment is the attached PDF file.

Specifically my questions are:

1. What is the problem they are experimenting on?

2. What is the activity of a protein and why is it important?

3. Why did they used Assays (how are assays advantageous to other techniques)?

4. What can we conclude from this experiment?

5. What are the results of the experiment and how were they processed?

6. Also a brief analysis of the results would help me understand this experiment also, what is their meaning and implications and utility?

7. Lastly whats the end result from this experiment, and how were they obtained and processed.

8. If you could help me out on these questions I would greatly appreciate because I have been trying to do this the past few days and simply cant. Please let me know if you need anything else from me and I will be more than happy to provide it.

Please Note that the part italicized Stoicheiometry of reactant and product is to be ignored and the direct method as well.
