Position Paper: "Sex, Marriage & Divorce" Guidelines -
1. Read 1 Corinthians 5-7.
2. Read:
a. Furnish, "Sex: Marriage and Divorce" (pp. 28-54).
b. Two commentaries on 1 Cor 7:1-40 (see Gorman, pp. 339-340, for suggestions). Real flesh & blood books! No online commentaries.
3. Think about the following questions:
What is the situation in Corinth that Paul is addressing?
What is/are Paul's position/s on sex, marriage, & divorce?
Why does Paul argue what he does?
Are there tensions or problems in what he says? What & why?
Is Paul addressing himself to the Corinthians only, or do you think he would take these positions regardless of the situation?
As best you can tell, how does Paul's overall position compare to the position/s advocated by his Greek and Jewish contemporaries regarding sex, marriage, and divorce?
What do you think about what Paul says and why?
4. In your paper (4-5 typed pages, double-spaced) address the following questions. Anticipate objections to your arguments as best you can.
a. What is Paul's position on sex, marriage, and divorce? How does he make his case and why does he say what he does?
b. To what extent do you think Paul's views are still valid today? Why should or shouldn't we take his approach to these issues seriously? (What does it mean to take what he says seriously?
