After reading the story, write a very short essay about the character of Mrs. Mallard. You will have an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. In this short writing, answer the following questions about Mrs. Mallard, a character who changes and develops in the story.
1. For the introduction: What is Mrs. Mallard like at the beginning of the story? Choose one short phrase to quote in order to "prove" your analysis. (You could begin your essay with this quote.) You do not need to cite this phrase, but do put the phrase inside quotation marks. Then state a thesis which will reveal how you intend to trace Mrs. Mallard's changes through the story. 100 words
2. First Body Paragraph: How does Mrs. Mallard change in the middle of the story, after being informed of the death of her husband? Quote one or two phrases to "prove" your analysis. You do not need to cite these phrases, but do put them inside quotation marks. 100 words
3. Second Body Paragraph: How does Mrs. Mallard change near the end of the story (before her death)? Quote phrases to "prove" your analysis. You do not need to cite these phrases, but do put them inside quotation marks. 100 words
4. Conclusion: Draw a conclusion about the character from the evidence you have presented. 50 words
Each time you use a quotation, you should also explain its relevance, not just give the quote. The quotes should be short to allow room for your analysis. Obviously, you must use an economy of words. Don't include any padding. Get to the point. Make your point. Move on.
