Q1) In the last film of the course, "Alive and Well," we learn about the importance of social integration for the elderly. Describe any of the readings or the lectures mentioned and what we know about the importance of keeping the elderly connected to the larger society. How are some cultures more likely to keep their elders living with them in their family homes compared to other cultures?
Q2) What is meant by the term caregiver burden? How do caregiving roles differ by culture and ethnicity? How does gender play a role in the caregiving that goes on in the US? What is meant by the term "sandwich generation?" Make sure you distinguish between formal and informal caregiving.
Q3) Explain why we see more sexually transmitted diseases among the elderly than we might expect and why STDs may be transmitted rather easily among the elderly in residential settings.
Q4) In the film "Amour" we learn about caregiving and the demands on family members.
Describe the film and how it relates to the course. Also, why do you think it ends the way it does? Are we as a society, prepared to care for the growing needs of an elderly population?
Q5) How is that caring for someone with "Dementia" can be particularly difficult? Describe the film, "Away From Her," and why you think the husband did what he did at the end of the film? Will we in the US and elsewhere have to worry about the increase in the numbers of those who suffer with Dementia/Alzheimer's?
Q6) What can account for (or explain) suicide among the elderly?
Why is it that older White men have particularly high suicide rates compared to other social groups? What did we discuss regarding the isolation suffered by the elderly?
