Question: How to respond to this discussion question? Understanding the scope of practice is important to maintain the level of competence that is beneficial and essential for a mental health care setting. A counselor or case manager should only be providing services they are trained and qualified to perform. Working outside of your scope of practice can risk and violate ethical standards within the mental health practice (Corey, 2024). For example if a client states they are having suicidal thought the counselor should not attempt to give mental health treatment independently and a supervisor should be notified and the practice procedures should be followed. Consulting with counselor is important because it minimizes the chances of a a situation becoming worse. A supervisor can provide guidance, ensure ethical standard are being uses and help protect the client's welfare. A good example is if i were unsure whether a situation requires reporting by consulting a supervisor it can help determine the appropriate legal and ethical course of action to remain ethical (National Organization for Human Services, 2024).
