What information do we get from the pictures

Problem

Relationships between Text, Image, and Animation

Reflect on the ways in which the text and the visuals in children's picture books relate to each other, and the different ways they communicate the story.

Instructions

i. Read The Weaver if you have not done so.

ii. Also if you have not done so, read the article "The Dynamics of Picturebook Communication" by Maria Nikolajeva and Carole Scott to learn about the different ways text and image relate to each other in picture books. (You will have to sign into the CCCO library with your S number, then click on "PDF Full Text" on the left side of the page to open the article.)

iii. Look at the animated illustrations from The Weaver that Qian Shi has posted on her website.

iv. Compose a post in which you answer the following questions, using at least one specific example from the text: How does the story in The Weaver depend on the visuals? What information do we get from the pictures that we don't get from the words? What does the animation add to or take away from these illustrations, and why?
