Nursing practice: Reflection Practice Narrative
I participated in the care of a 1-month-old infant diagnosed with failure to thrive (FTT). The infant's situation was complicated by significant social and familial stressors. The baby's father was actively disengaged from the care, showing little interest in his child's well-being, while the mother was struggling with postpartum depression. In addition to her emotional challenges, the mother also had two other toddlers under the age of 3, which made her situation even more complex. One day, the mother brought the infant to the hospital for care but left the baby alone in the room and left the unit without informing anyone. When we entered the room, we discovered the baby unsupervised. This was concerning given the baby's vulnerability due to the failure to thrive diagnosis and the absence of appropriate parental supervision. During the handover report, the nursing team discussed the infant's case, highlighting the absence of care, the mother's mental health concerns, and the father's lack of involvement. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, we promptly notified social services to assess the safety and well-being of the baby and determine whether it was necessary to apprehend the child for further protection. Following the social services intervention, the baby was placed in a foster home, where they could receive the care and support needed for healthy growth and development. When I followed up two days later, I learned that the baby was doing well in foster care and was receiving the necessary nutritional support and emotional attention that had been lacking at home. The baby's condition was further complicated by significant social and familial stressors, including an emotionally disengaged father and a mother who was struggling with postpartum depression while caring for two toddlers under the age of 3. As I processed the situation, I found that my own emotions were triggered, particularly because I am a mother myself. The mother's struggles, the baby's vulnerability, and the complex dynamics of the family stirred feelings of empathy, frustration, and concern. These emotions, while natural, highlighted the importance of being aware of my own biases and how they might influence my practice.
