Problem:
During the assessment process, the client reports insomnia, racing thoughts, difficulty with concentration and had physical symptoms such as a pounding heart which are common symptoms of anxiety disorders. A clinician using the DSM-5-TR guidelines in the social work assessment model would evaluate the criteria related to generalized anxiety or panic related symptoms such as excessive worrying, restlessness, sleep disturbance, difficulty with concentration and physical symptoms of anxiety like a racing heart (Gray, 2025). These symptoms can be debilitating when very severe because they interfere with functioning at school, work and home.
Though, these symptoms have only occurred for three days, which is shorter than the duration required to meet criteria for most anxiety disorders. Due to this, the clinician would likely document anxiety symptoms and continue the assessment rather than assign a firm diagnosis right away. Ongoing evaluation helps rule out any situational stressors, substance use or medical issues that could be causing symptoms before determining a formal diagnosis (Gray, 2025). Need Assignment Help?
