What ideas/discourses undergirded the ways the various American 'Wests' were created (through purchases, treaties, and acts of war), viewed (in pictures and rhetorically) and realized (through settlement and development)? How might the historical geographical episode of 'westering' be seen as foundational to America's (i.e., the United States') national identity? And, in what ways might such a perspective be problematic?
