In the articles that I have read to obtain a clearer understanding of the life cyle that organizations experience there was one Klassen, 2001, Rivera-Camino 2007 in their research studied the relationships among the market orientation, natural environmental policy, organizational life cyle and innovativeness of small to medium sized enterprises. These authors also indicated that an organization is characterized by the distinct features that are signficant and that through the life cyle they can transistion to the next period by paying attention to the market, environment and innovative processes that are occurring. Another point that was indicated is that any new strategic initiative that is introduced, such as strong enviornment focus associated with high initial costs and longer payback periods, and the enviornment could threaten the cost structure of the organizations. (Dibrell, Craig and Hansen,2011).

The important fact that I have learned is that organizations need to be flexible and adaptable to internal changes as well as external changes and be strategic and keep a competitive edge.

As I have mentioned, I participate in a lot of non-profit work. I have seen organizational life cycles at all stages. There is some great information on this topic in our text but I found some more resources in my research this week that I hope will add to your understanding of this topic. There is a great graphic on a non-profit lifecycle in that can be found at https://www.nhnonprofits.org/content/organizational-life-cycle-stages. What I further ponder though is if this is truly a good explanation of the non-profit world on average, how can we still have non-profits that are 100 years old? A great example is the Junior League. We are struggling as an organization because we are membership based but we have surpassed the 100 year mark. How have we managed to survive? Other examples? Thoughts?

Organizational Life Cycle is a concept made famous by Alfred Chandler (1962). The Organizational Life Cycle is an organizations progress through various stages during their lifetime. The most significant characteristic of an organization during the organizational life cycle is existence and success. The organization is known and has achieved success. The organization has established itself and through their mission, vision, objectives and environmental policy they have experienced success. An organization will know how they have moved from one cycle to the next is how they adapt to changes in the task of the environment and the role of competitiveness and innovation.

Michel Porter (1991) in his interview regarding the Competitive Advantage of Nations in essence successful organizations have made it up the ladder by being competitive and innovative. During the stages of their cycle organization should know when they have moved from one cycle to the next based upon their competition policies, their environmental policies and they focus of relevance that has been established. Aragon-Correa et al, (2008) found that organizations with an environmental policy potentially enlarge the field of information considered relevant by a firm increasing the number of ideas that can lead to innovations.
